ROMANIA-BIRD-FLU


Sanitary workers place culled domestic poultry in a plastic bag while another disinfects the area in the southeasern Romanian village of Borcea, 180 kms east of Bucharest, 07 March 2006. The village-s 100,000 birds will be culled and affected farmers will be compensated. After the H5 bird flu virus was detected 05 March 2006 in local farm birds following preliminary tests conducted on the spot, the village was placed under quarantine. In total, over 291,000 birds on 10,500 farms have been culled in Romania since the bird flu virus was first discovered in the country in October 2005. The bird flu virus has been found in over 40 locations in Romania, making it the most affected European country, but there have been no cases of humans contracting the disease.
