FRANCE-ANGOLA-JUSTICE-ANGOLAGATE

Jean-Christophe Mitterrand, the son of late French president Francois Mitterrand arrives at Paris' courthouse on March 4, 2009, to take part in a hearing of the trial over a vast "arms-to-Angola" scandal involving forty-two people including himself and dozens of businessmen, politicians and public figures. Dubbed "Angolagate" by the French press, the long-running affair has cast a shadow over a raft of senior government officials, including many who served during Mitterrand's two-term Socialist presidency from 1981 to 1995. Former prefect Jean Charles Marchiani, was sentenced to jail for receiving multi-million-dollar kickbacks for public contracts in the 1990s but was released on February 16, 2009 after being presidential pardonned.
