A picture taken on July 18, 2014 shows the Cyprus Airways Trident passenger plane that remains on the tarmac at Nicosia's abandoned airport, now located within the UN-controlled buffer zone that separates the Turkish-controlled north from the south of Cyprus. Forty years after the division of Cyprus, Greek and Turkish Cypriot still live seprately. On July 20, 1974, the first Turkish troops landed on the north coast at Kyrenia, with the declared aim of protecting the Turkish Cypriot minority after a coup to unite the island with Greece.
