BRAZIL-US-CRIME-RAIFRAN SALES DAS NEVES-NUN-STANG
Raifran Sales das Neves (C), suspected to be the killer of the US born nun Dorothy Stang, is guarded by Brazilian policemen agents 21 February 2005 upon his arrival in the 51th Jungle-s Infantry Battalion base in Altamira, Para, northern Brazil. Rayfran is the second suspect arrested by Brazilian police in the murder of Stang, a 74-year-old missionary who spent decades working with the poor in Para state. After Stang-s murder February 12, the government sent 2,000 troops to the northern state in an effort to avert more violence. Stang was shot dead near an encampment for landless farmers. Brazilian authorities have suggested owners of illegal ranches who are encroaching on the Amazon land were behind the crime. AFP PHOTO ANTONIO SCORZA
