US President George W. Bush awards former Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel with a Presidential Medals of Freedom during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House 23 July, 2003 in Washington, DC. Havel, a champion of democracy and opportunity, was honored for his many personal sacrifices and contributions to the cause of freedom and justice. Applauding is US pianist Van Cliburn (L) also a medal recipient. Bush awarded the medals to eleven recipients. The medal is the nation's highest civilian award, recognizing exceptional meritorious service.
