FRANCE-JUSTICE-CORSICA-MAILLOT
The former chairman of the French tour operator Nouvelles Frontieres, Jacques Maillot, waits 10 March 2005 at the entrance of the courthouse at the Palace of Justice in Paris for the start the trial of Charles Pieri, a Corsican nationalist suspected of leading the French island-s biggest underground organisation, on charges of racketeering and financing terrorism. Pieri, a 54 year-old veteran of the separatist cause, is accused of overseeing a system of mafia-style extortion between 1993 and 2003 in which high-profile tourist companies, such as Club Med, were forced to pay money in order to stop a campaign of bomb-attacks. Twenty-one others are also on trial including several family members and the nationalist leader in the Corsican regional assembly, Jean-Guy Talamoni. All deny the charges.
