IRAQ-SHOES-NORUZ
A cobbler stretches the inside of a traditional Kurdish shoe, made of white cloth and wooden soles covered in material, 18 March 2005, in the northern city of Suleimaniya, 330kms from Baghdad. The shoes and traditional dress are worn by all Kurds young and old during the Noruz festivities. March 21 marks the Kurdish New Year, Noruz (new day), which occurs during the spring equinox. Homes are usually decorated with flowers, preferably tulips and hyacinths, and bear a fish bowl. The fish are supposed to turn toward Mecca on the New Year. AFP PHOTO/AHMAD AL-RUBAYE
