IRAQ-SHOES-NORUZ

A tailor sews traditional Kurdish clothes made from locally produced cotton cloth, 18 March 2005, in the northern city of Suleimaniya, 330kms from Baghdad. The Kamees (shirt/jacket) and baggy trousers sell for 100 US dollars and are worn with handmade shoes (background) which sell for 60 US dollars. The outfits are worn by all Kurds young and old during the Noruz festivities which culminate on March 21 marking the Kurdish New Year, Noruz (new day), which occurs during the spring equinox. Homes are usually decorated with flowers, preferably tulips and hyacinths, and bear a fish bowl. The fish are supposed to turn toward Mecca on the New Year. AFP PHOTO/AHMAD AL-RUBAYE
