Indian tsunami orphan children are portrayed at an orphanage, in Nagapattinam, in India-s southern Tamil Nadu State, some 325 kms south of Madras, 21 March 2005. The Tamil Nadu state government said in January that a preliminary survey showed more than 500 children may have lost one or both parents in the 26 December 2004 tsunamis. To help the children, the state government opened three orphanages as well as promising a bank deposit of 100,000 Indian Rupees (2,325 US Dollars) for the children to access when they turn 18. A total of 7,983 people were confirmed killed in Tamil Nadu following the devastating tsunamis that hit the Indian Ocean coastline late 2004. AFP PHOTO/Dibyangshu SARKAR
