Frenchwoman Maud Fontenoy approaches the island of Hiva Oa, French Polynesia, 26 March 2005. Maud Fontenoy became the first woman to row solo across the Pacific Ocean today after arriving in French Polynesia at the end of a nearly 8,000-kilometre (4,960-mile) journey that took her 73 days. The 26-year-old Frenchwoman, who in 2003 became the first woman to row across the North Atlantic Ocean alone, crossed the finishing line of her feat north of the island of Hiva Oa, one of the Marquises Islands.
