BRAZIL-RIO-MASSACRE

Thirty people, including three children, were killed by eight gunmen in two cars driving around northern Rio de Janeiro suburbs. The group of shooters which appeared to be "made up of police officers", first killed 15 people in the Nova Iguazu neighborhood at around 8:40 pm (2340 GMT) Thursday, followed by another 15 people an hour later in Queimados, said the Secretary of Security of Rio de Janeiro state Marcelo Itagiba. Rio-s largest previous massacre was on August 29, 1993 when about 30 police officers killed 21 residents of the Vigario Geral shantytown. AFP PHOTO/VANDERLEI ALMEIDA
