The musical director of La Scala, Riccardo Muti, has resigned after nine years at the helm of Milan-s prestigious opera house, ending a long, acrimonious conflict over programming. This resignation came less than three weeks after the orchestra and personnel demanded that Muti step down after weeks of bitter in-fighting over his decision to fire commissioner Mauro Meli-s predecessor, Carlo Fontana, in late February.
