US-NYSE-CARTER

This undated handout photo received 11 April 2005, shows Marshall Carter. The New York Stock Exchange has named former State Street Boston chief executive Marshall Carter as chairman, making him the second to hold the post after a major pay scandal forced a shakeup at the prestigious exchange. Carter, 64, takes over from John Reed, the former co-chief executive of Citigroup, who came out of retirement in 2003 to lead the NYSE after a pay scandal forced the resignation of Dick Grasso. A senior fellow at Harvard University, Carter, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, served as head of State Street from 1992 to 2001. He was elected by the board of directors late 07 April 2005, following the annual meeting at the exchange. Carter will take over as the NYSE considers becoming a for-profit exchange, a move favored by some as the stock exchange competes with rivals such as the Nasdaq. AFP PHOTO/NYSE
