LEBANON-POLITICS
Lebanese President Emile Lahoud (L) meets with outgoing premier Omar Karameh 15 April 2005 at the Baabda presidential palace in the hills east of Beirut. The Lebanese opposition proposed today a pro-Syrian figure as its candidate for prime minister in order to guarantee that the Damascus-backed regime holds crucial elections on time. Lebanon has been without a government since pro-Syrian Karameh resigned at the end of February under the weight of huge protests sparked by the assassination of his predecessor Hariri. Karameh was designated on March 10 to form a new cabinet but threw in the towel yesterday. AFP PHOTO/DALATI & NOHRA/HO
