Meliha Altinel, 86 year-old Turkish woman from Gallipoli region touches with tenderness Turkish soldier monument which is symbolizing died soldiers during the Gallipoli conflict in 1915, before the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Anzac Day, in Gallipoli peninsula, near the northwestern town of Canakkale, 23 April 2005. The Anzac Day, honours those killed in battle in the 1915 Gallipoli landings. Some 35.000 troops from Australia, Britain, France, India and New Zealand died in the unsuccessful eight month Gallipoli campaign launched to force the Ottoman Empire to open the Dardanelles to the Allied fleet during Worl War I.
