TOGO-UNREST-REFUGEES

Immigrants from Niger, Nigeria, Ghana and Mauritania, all victims of the recent riots in the Togolese capital stand near a mosque in the center of the city, where they took refuge, 29 April 2005. Only one citizen of the west African state of Niger was killed in violence that marred the presidential election in Togo, and not eight as reported by Togolese authorities, Niger-s government spokesman said yesterday. "The very precise information at our disposal indicate that only one Niger citizen was killed during the night of April 26-27, and another injured and admitted to hospital in Lome," government spokesman Mohamed Ben Omar told AFP. In Lome on Wednesday Interior Minister Katari Foli-Bazi, citing accounts from local residents, that the charred bodies of eight Nigerois had been found after they were severely beaten by rioters. Togolese officials said at least 22 people were killed in clashes following the declaration of ruling party candidate Faure Gnassingbe as the winner of Togo-s disputed presidential poll.
