ROMANIA-WWII-HISTORY-KING MICHAEL

Romania-s former king Michael, his son Prince Radu (L-background) and wife Anne de Bourbon-Parme (R), pay homage 05 May 2005 in Kromeriz to Romanian soldiers who died in World War II. King Michael began 03 May a five-day drive through Slovakia and the Czech Republic to visit the graves of Romanian soldiers. The 83-year-old Michael, who switched sides during the war and was the last surviving head of state to have played a mayor role in the conflict, is doing the driving himself and is accompanied by his wife Anne de Bourbon-Parme and son Prince Radu. Michael already visited Bratislava and Banska Bystrica in Slovakia and Kromeriz in the Czech Republic and will visit Brno and Prague and then fly to Moscow, where he has been invited by Russian President Vladimir Putin to take part in ceremonies commemorating the defeat of the Nazis. In August 23, 1944, when Romania was fighting on the side of the Germans, the king ordered the arrest of Romania-s pro-Nazi ruler Ion Antonescu. AFP PHOTO MICHAL CIZEK
