AFGHANISTAN-US-MILITARY-CHIEFS
Afghan warlord and former Presidential candidate Haji Mohammed Mohqiq (C), Yunus Qanooni, Karzai-s chief rival in the last presidential elections (L) and Minister of Energy and Power, Mohammed Ismail Khan (R) wait for talks to begin with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the Pesidential Palace in Kabul, 08 May 2005. Karzai addressed a gathering of about 800 tribal chiefs, religious leaders and members of 2002 and 2003 Loya Jirgas to discuss national issues including a "strategic partnership with the United States". The issue of a -strategic partnership with the United States- first came to the fore when US Senator John McCain said during his visit to the city in February, that US permanent military bases in Afghanistan would further the interests of the United States and regional security.
