The Hindu right-wing group Vishwa Hindu Parisad (VHP) plan to stage a "Sankalp Diwas" (Resolution Day) demonstration in the town 19 October, to build a temple on the ruins of the Babri mosque razed to the ground by Hindu fundamentalists in 1992. Organisers claim more than 200,000 Hindus from all over India are on their way to Ayodhya, some 126 kms (78 miles) from the Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow, for the protest.
