SYRIA-BAATH-CONGRESS
This combo shows six of the 14 members of the national command of Syria-s ruling Baath party, named 09 June 2005 at the end of the party-s four-day congress in Damascus. The new leadership included several newcomers, leaving out most of the veterans, while President Bashar al-Assad (top R) was re-elected as secretary general of the party. Clockwise from top L are Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara, President Assad, Finance Minister Mohammed al-Hussein, Parliament Speaker Mahmud al-Abrash, Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Otri and Defence Minister Hassan Turkmani. Turkmani and Abrash make their entry to the Baath national command, while Otri, Hussein and Shara keep their places. AFP PHOTO
