FRANCE-STORE-SAMARITAINE
Employees of the landmark Paris department store La Samaritaine stage a sit-in, 15 June 2005 in Paris, as the department store closes for several years. The department store closes today, perhaps forever, after inspectors found that the century-old building by the Seine river falls catastrophically short of fire safety norms. In the last 15 years there has been a drastic decline in the store-s sales. LVMH, which took control in 2001, denied union allegations that it plans to close the store for good and convert the building into office space. AFP PHOTO JOEL SAGET
