US-WEATHER-HURICANE EMILY
This National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite image received 20 July 2005 shows Hurricane Emily as it moves on up the northeastern coast of Mexico. Hurricane Emily, upgraded to a dangerous category three storm, lumbered toward the shores of Mexico-s Tamaulipas state early 20 July after killing 10 people in the Caribbean and lashing the Yucatan peninsula. "The State Council for Civil Protection has declared a red alert," the Tamaulipas state government said in a statement. Most of the estimated 17,000 people living in the coastal area directly in the path of Emily have been evacuated to shelters, local officials said. The hurricane, packing sustained winds of 205 kilometers (125 miles) per hour, was approaching the Laguna Madre and expected to make landfall near San Fernando in the next few hours, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. The threatened coastal areas are sparsely populated, but forecasts indicated the storm-s inland track could eventually take it dangerously close to Monterrey, Mexico-s third largest city with some four million inhabitants.Texas was spared from Emily-s powerful winds, but the NHC said the storm could trigger isolated tornados over the southern and south-central part of the state.
