NIGER-FOOD-CRISIS
A dead zebu lies 25 July 2005 on a road near Dakoro, about 130 km north of Maradi, considered the epicenter of Niger-s current hunger.
. Forced themselves by Niger-s food crisis to eat the bitter leaves from plants traditionally used as fodder, Fulani and Tuareg herders are desperately trying to save their cattle -- and their livelihoods. In recent weeks as picked-over grasses and shrubs have wizened awaiting rains that have just begun to arrive, the nomadic herders have trudged the narrow greenbelt that they have used for pasture land for generations, to little avail. Stringy carcasses of hundreds of cows, their signature humps shrunk to nothing, their sloping horns cracked or missing completely, litter the dusty tracks wending from the villages in the agro-pastoral belt into the desert beyond. "The herders went north too quickly, after hearing that the rains had begun," said Stephane Pil, leading a project for Veterinarians Without Borders (VSF) here in Dakoro. AFP PHOTO FRANCIS TEMMAN
