NIGER-FOOD-CRISIS
Nigerois mothers and their children walk 25 July 2005 on a road leading to the Medecins Sans Frontiers (Doctors without Borders) therapeutic feeding center of Maradoufa, near Maradi, considered the epicenter of Niger-s current hunger. The first major airlifts of emergency food aid to Niger are scheduled to begin 28 July 2005, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) announced Wednesday as part of an international bid to save an estimated 2.5 million people from starvation. An Ilyushin-76 aircraft will take off from WFP-s humanitarian response depot in Brindisi, Italy, early Thursday with 44 tonnes of high-energy biscuits for Niger-s capital Niamey, the Rome-based organisation said.
