END OF THE WAR/HIROSHIMA PHOTO PACKAGE
(FILES) This National Archives handout photo received 01 August 2005 and taken 02 September 1945 in Tokyo Bay shows US General Douglas MacArthur (R) as Supreme Allied Commander during formal Japanese surrender ceremonies on the USS Missouri, as US Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright and Lieutenant General A. E. Percival (both behind MacArthur) look on. Japan surrendered 02 September 1945 to Allied forces following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, officially ending World War II, bringing down the curtain on the costliest conflict in history.
