Angela Merkel, head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and candidate for Chancellor of the conservative opposition union, gives a press conference on 25 August 2005 in Berlin to comment the ruling of Germany-s highest court on complaints against the decision for early elections. The federal constitutional court in Karlsruhe ruled seven-to-one to reject the complaints of Werner Schulz of the Greens and Jelena Hoffmann of the Social Democrats who had argued that Schroeder-s deliberate loss of a parliamentary no-confidence to bring the poll forward by one year violated Germany-s Basic Law.
