US-WEATHER-KATRINA-USS GRAPPLE


In this 17 January, 2004 US Navy handout image,the Safeguard-class rescue and salvage ship USS Grapple (ARS 53) endures a rare snow storm while moored at Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Little Creek, Virginia. The US Department of Defense announced 31 August, 2005 that the Grapple along with the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) and the amphibious transport dock USS Shreveport (LPD 12), both based at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia, and the dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46) also based at Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Little Creek, Va., will join the Norfolk-based multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), which is already off the Gulf Coast to assist in the relief effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
