EU-TURKEY-FOREIGN SUMMIT-NEWPORT
Turkish Foreign minister Abddulah Gul (2nd R) arrives at the Gymnich meeting (Informal meeting of EU Foreign ministers) in the Celtic Manor near Newport, Wales, 02 september 2005. Gul said Thursday that he rejected the idea of allowing Cypriot ships and airplanes free access to Turkish ports and airports as demanded by the European Union. "Turkey has not become a member of the European Union. What is expected of a member state is different from what is expected of a candidate country," he continued, before warning: "No-one plays politics with Turkey. No-one should try and exploit us.
