The cargo-passenger ship of the National Corsica Mediterranean Company (SNCM) "Pascal Paoli" is moored in Toulon harbor, 29 September 2005, a day after it was retaken by an elite commando force from striking seamen in Bastia, Corsica in the morning. The recapture of the Pascal Paoli followed a second night of violent clashes overnight between police and union militants protesting against the planned sale of SNCM to a French investment group. In recent years SNCM has been in financial freefall after losing a monopoly on ferry services to the island of Corsica.
