Pro-nationalist Union of Corsican Workers Union (STC) leaders Alain Mosconi (L) and Felix Da Gregorio (C) leave the Marseilles Courts 30 September 2005 after being freed on parole, charged with allegedly leading the takeover at sea of a ferry belonging to the troubled state-owned National Corsica Mediterranean Company (SNCM), in a bitter privatisation dispute. Some saw the release of four charged STC leaders as a possible sign of the government-s appeasement of demonstrators. Tensions remained at boiling-point on the island -- home to some 250,000 people -- after another night of violence in which unknown militants fired a rocket at the prefecture, the main government building in Ajaccio.
