The Catalan regional parliament last week agreed to move toward a new statute demanding greater autonomy from Madrid, though the project requires an absolute majority in the national parliament prior to becoming law. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero said he would "not reject outright" a broader statute for the region, which notably calls Catalonia a nation in apparent contradiction with the Spanish constitution, but added that he could not accept it "as it is" either.
