FRANCE-JUSTICE-MITTERRAND-WIRETAP
One member of the secret tapping unit, Captain Paul Barril, (L) working for the anti-terrorist office at the Elysee Palace under Francois Mitterrand leaves the Paris court with his lawyer, 09 November 2005 after he was fined 5,000 Euros (USD 5,700) and given a six month suspended prison in one of France-s longest-running legal cases for a phone-tapping scandal dating back 20 years. The scandal broke in 1993 when Liberation newspaper reported that the telephones of around 150 people -- including journalists, lawyers and celebrities -- had been tapped from the Elysee palace between 1983 and 1986 with Mitterrand-s full approval. The other main defendant, Gilles Menage, was Mitterrand-s cabinet director between 1988 and 1992. Mitterrand set up his secret anti-terrorist office in August 1982, just after a bomb killed nine people in Paris. AFP PHOTO JACQUES DEMARTHON
