SPAIN-BASQUE COUNTRY-ETXEZARRETA
Roberto Etxezarreta (Centre-R), representative for the 56 accused, and spokeswoman for the organization 18/98 Platform, Maite Aritegi (Centre-L) speak with police to let them pass the police line to speak with journalists, outside the High Court in Madrid, 21 November 2005. The biggest-ever trial related to the Basque armed separatist group ETA began with 56 people facing charges of helping the separatists through a network of support organisations. The prosecutor has asked for prison sentences ranging from 10 to 51 years for the 56 defendants, who are accused of belonging to or collaborating with ETA and of committing tax offenses. The 56 are allegedly linked to a network of outfits said by anti-terrorist judge Baltasar Garzon to have propped up ETA. AFP PHOTO/PIERRE-PHILIPPE MARCOU
