ROMANIA-BIRD FLU-ZAVOAIA
Sanitary-veterinary workers catch domestic gees to be culled as the village of Zavoaia (200 km north-east from Bucharest) was put under quarantine due to bird flu suspicion, 08 December 2005. Romanian authorities confirmed the presence of the H5 virus in birds from other two villages, Agighiol and Crisan in the east of the country. Tests have yet to determine if they were infected with the virulent H5N1 sub-strain that has killed nearly 70 people in Asia over the past two years. After more than a dozen outbreaks, Romanian veterinary officials expect more cases of avian influenza to emerge with the arrival of waves of migrating wild birds. AFP PHOTO STRINGER
