IRAQ-US-BRAZIL-MARINES
Brazilian-born US marines Lance Corporal Felipe Santos Mesquita (L), 22, from Edison, New Jersey, Corporal Felipe Carvalho Barbosa (C), 21, from High Point, North Carolina, and Lance Corporal Daniel Moreira de Carvalho (R), 24, from Springfield, Virginia, pose for a portrait atop a train wagon inside a military compound, set up at the non-working and destroyed train station in Fallujah, 50km west of Baghdad, 20 December 2005. Mesquita, who originally comes from Belo Horizonte city, of Minas Gerais state, Barbosa and Carvalho from Bento Ribeiro and Duque de Caxias suburbs, both from Rio de Janeiro city, have been deploying in Iraq for their first time since September 2005, attached with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines Regiment. Self-confessed, all three of them had already killed resistence fighters when their patrol, in charge of the northern area of the restive city of Fallujah, came under insurgent fire. Mesquita and Barbosa have decided to join in Marines due to family tradition (their uncles are still serving in Brazilian Navy) and Carvalho for adventure reasons and patriotism after September 11th attacks in United States.
