ALGERIA-POLITICS-BOUTEFLIKA
Algerians wave national flags as they greet President Abdelazziz Bouteflika on a main street of Algiers City, 31 December 2005. Bouteflika returned homeland, after being treated for five weeks in Paris. In power since 1999, the president is widely credited for having since pulled off a virtually complete halt to an Islamic extremist insurgency that took Algeria in its deadly grip in 1992, at a cost of an estimated 150,000 lives.
