US-ATTACKS-PADILLA-MIAMI
Armed security officer await the arrival of US terror suspect Jose Padilla 05 January, 2006, at the Federal Court House in Miami. The US Supreme Court ruled 04 January that Padilla, detained for over three years as an "enemy combatant" in a military prison, could be transferred into civilian hands for trial. Approving a request by the US attorney general, the court ruled against a lower court which on December 21 blocked the transfer, questioning the government-s tactics in the Padilla case. Padilla "will be physically transferred to a civil center in Miami," his lawyer Andrew Patel said after the decision Wednesday. Padilla, alias Abdullah al-Mujahir, born in Brooklyn, New York and a convert to Islam, was detained in Chicago in May 2002 on suspicion that he had planned attacks against the United States.
