HAITI-ELECTION-PEACEKEEPER
A Brazilian UN peacekeeper stands guard at a check point at the Brazilian military base in the Bel-Air section of Port-au-prince, Haiti. In a major setback to the UN mission, its Brazilian commander, General Urano Teixeira da Matta Bacellar, was found dead 07 January in an apparent suicide. The UN force, known as MINUSTAH, includes more than 7,200 troops and 1,700 police. The mission was deployed to stabilize the impoverished country after former president Jean Bertrand Aristide fled in February 2004 amid an armed uprising. After postponing elections four times, Haiti-s interim government yielded to international pressure over the weekend and scheduled 07 February for the first round of voting. AFP PHOTO/ Walter ASTRADA
