Philippine police officers stand guard in front of the US embassy in Manila, 12 January 2006 after Philippine foreign affairs officers visited the four US Marines who are being detained in the embassy after being accused of raping a Filipina woman following a joint exercises on November 01. Philippine official Zosimo Paredes visited the embassy to inspect if the four are truly being detained in accordance with a bilateral agreement covering US troops participating in joint exercises in this country. Under that agreement, the embassy can have custody of the accused Americans while the case is being tried. However many prominent Filipinos are demanding that the US government turn them over to the Philippines. AFP PHOTO Joel NITO
