PORTUGAL-SAMPAIO
(Files) this file picture shows Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio makes a speech 11 October 2005 at Paris Unesco headquarters. Portuguese Attorney General Jose Souto de Moura pledged 13 January 2005 to investigate a newspaper report that police illegally monitored the telephones of top government figures as part of a probe into a paedophile scandal. The 24 Horas newspaper reported that the records of nearly 80,000 telephone calls made from 208 telephone numbers, including those belonging to Sampaio, the attorney general himself, two former prime ministers and scores of politicians, were obtained extra-judicially by police. No one listed in the press has been charged or named as suspect in the police probe into allegations of decades of abuse at Casa Pia, a Lisbon-based state network of children-s care homes. Since November 2004, seven people, including a popular TV star and a former diplomat, have been on trial. AFP PHOTO/ NICOLAS ASFOURI
