GERMANY-COMMUNISTS-COMMEMORATION-LUXEMBURG-LIEBKNECHT
Gregor Gysi (L) and Oskar Lafontaine (R), both parliamentary group leaders of The Left party, and Hans Modrow (C, behind), one of the last leaders of the eastern German Democratic Republic, lay a wreath 15 January 2006 at Berlin-s Socialist Memorial to commemorate the German communists Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, who were killed by soldiers during a socialist uprising in January 1919. In 1918, the pair transformed the Spartacus League into the German Communist Party then tried to proclaim a German Soviet Republic. AFP PHOTO DDP/JOHANNES EISELE GERMANY OUT
