FINLAND-PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
Finnish President Tarja Halonen (L) and her closest rival, Sauli Niinistoe (R) watch the TV screens as the first predictions for the Presidental elections appear 15 January 2006. The count of early votes in the election, cast mostly in rural areas, showed incumbent Tarja Halonen ahead but short of an absolute majority. Some 1.2 million of Finland-s 4.2 voters had cast their votes early. Halonen was credited with 49.6 percent of those votes, Sauli Niinistoe with 22.2 and Matti Vanhanen, with 19.5 percent.
