Members of the Philippine Army-s 69th Infantry Battalion lower the Philippine flag, 11 January 2006, during a sunset ceremony in the town of Mexico, north of Manila, inside the headquarters of the military unit which is on the frontline of a 37-year-old communist insurgency. The protracted communist guerilla war, according to government figures, claimed 40,000 lives between 1984 and 2005 and despite a series of peace talks by successive presidents over the last 30 years, peace is nowhere in sight.
