VENEZUELA-US-CHAVEZ-7TH ANNIVERSARY
Venezuela´s President Hugo Chavez (C) delivers a speech next to Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel (L) and Interior and Justice Minister Jessy Chacon, during a celebration at a Caracas theatre to mark the seventh anniversary of his coming to power, 02 February 2006. Venezuela expelled the US navy attache in Caracas, Commander John Correa, with Chavez accusing the officer of spying and setting off new diplomatic hostilities with the United States. "We have decided, in diplomatic terms, to declare him persona non grata, in plain Spanish that means to throw out of the country an officer at the US military mission for spying," the Venezuelan president, a virulent critic of the US, said in a speech at the theatre.
