HAITI-UN-PEACEKEEPERS
A Haitian boy watches a Brazilian army UN peacekeeper walk past a house in his neighborhood during a house to house search of the Cite Militaire district of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti 17 November, 2005. The Brazilians set up a small base in the impoverished neighborhood as part of their efforts to curtail the recent violence blamed on armed gangs that control the area. There are currently some 9,500 military and police troops in the UN Stabilization Force in Haiti (MINUSTAH). The new MINUSTAH commander said 01 February, 2006 that the UN forces must take control of the sprawling, gang-infested slum of Cite Soleil which borders Cite Militaire. The UN troops have struggled to restore order to the impoverished and violence-wracked Caribbean country since then president Jean Bertrand Aristide resigned and fled two years ago. Minustah is being deployed around the country to provide security for the 07 February elections. PHOTO/Roberto SCHMIDT ...
