A woman who identifed herself as Vanessa uses the Oraquick rapid HIV testing device at the South Brooklyn Health Center 07 February 2006 in New York City, on National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a nationwide effort to draw attention to the fact that the AIDS-causing virus has disproportionately affected the black community. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), of the estimated 42,514 AIDS diagnoses in 2004, nearly half, 49 percent, were among African Americans.
