Syria named long-serving Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara as vice president 11 February 2006, replacing Abdul Halim Khaddam, branded a traitor by Damascus. Shara, 68, has been foreign minister since 1984 and his appointment as vice president was made by presidential decree and reported by the official news agency SANA today.
