FILES-SYRIA-POLITICS-ASSAD-SHARA-KHADDAM
(FILES) -- File picture dated 27 March 2001 shows Syrian president Bachar al-Assad (C), then vice president, Abdul Halim Khaddam (L), and Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara at the opening session of the Arab Summit in Amman. Long-serving Syrian Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara was named as vice president 11 February 2006, state news agency SANA reported, replacing Khaddam, branded a traitor by Damascus. President Bashar al-Assad replaced Shara with Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Muallem in a cabinet shakeup that left the key posts of prime minister and defence minister unchanged.
