MIDEAST-ARAB-SYRIA
(FILES) -- File picture dated 21 October 2000 shows Syrian President Bashar al-Assad (L) speaking to his Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara before the opening of the Arab summit in Cairo. Long-serving Syrian Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara was named as vice president 11 February 2006, state news agency SANA reported, replacing Khaddam, branded a traitor by Damascus. President Bashar al-Assad replaced Shara with Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Muallem in a cabinet shakeup that left the key posts of prime minister and defence minister unchanged.
