US-CLIMATE-WARMING-GLACIER
This May 2005 NASA image received 21 February, 2006 shows the calving front, or break-off point into the ocean, of Helheim Glacier, located in southeast Greenland. This glacier is now one of the fastest moving glaciers in the world. Over the past five years, glaciers in Greenland have been breaking off into the Atlantic nearly twice as fast as previously thought, contributing one-sixth to a sea level rise, US researchers said. Measurements taken since 2000 on Greenland-s southeastern glaciers, show that with rising temperatures -- three degrees Celsius in 20 years -- more melt water flows under the glaciers, speeding up their flow to the sea, researchers for Science magazine said in the 18 February issue.
